After figuring out the App Idea, We need to have an In-Depth understanding of our requirements for the project and this can be done best via surveying the various stakeholders associated with the project. The various stakeholders associated with our project were:
- The Customers, who sold the scrap and bought the recycled goods from our recycled products selling website.
- The scrap dealers, who would help us in collection of the scraps from the customers, and
- The Industries, which would accept our segregated scrap and would put up their recycled products for sale on our website.
For the first stakeholder, we circulated Google Forms to all our contacts via the social networks and asked them to fill the form and also to share them with their associates. The response was pretty good. We received close to 200 responses and they were from different states, different age groups, and also from different work backgrounds. The survey details are as follows:
As the results indicate, majority of the people are interested in our project.
For the rest two categories of the stakeholders, we divided ourselves into two groups: Madhukar, Anil and me would go survey the Scrap Dealers while Tanmay, Megana and Vikesh would survey the industries.
In our visit to the Scrap dealers place at Pethapur, Gandhinagar, we gathered information regarding the various types of scrap that is collected by them and what they do to the scrap later on.
Our first stop was at a Scrap dealer dealing with plastic items only. He would get the scrap from several small scrap collectors that collect scrap from homes. The scrap would then be segregated there. The recycling industries from Ahmedabad would collect the scrap from time to time via trucks.
The next scrap dealer we met dealt with the rubber scraps. He would mainly collect it from the Vehicle repair shops nearby. The scrap is sent to Ahmedabad based industries where the rubber is recycled to extract the oil from it. The average transaction is around 200-300kg/month.
Our next visit was to a scrap collector who himself collects from homes and sells the scrap to those in need. He doesn't give the collection to a bigger Scrap Dealer. He seemed very interested in our app idea and felt it would be actually easier to collect scrap via customer requests on mobile.
Our final stop was at a scrap dealer dealing with the glass products. He generally collects the scrap from local shops and vendors for around Rs.1.5 - Rs.2 per bottle. He sells the scrap to both industries and retailers. He too felt good about the app idea and wished us luck in achieving our goals.
